U nimin's Guion Plant is located in the heart of the small town of Guion, Ark. in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The plant, which operates an under- ground mine, a surface quarry, and a sand process- ing plant, has quite a history. The mine was originally incorporated by the Duncan family in 1917. When the family first be- gan mining, it had a contract to ship 1,000 tons (10 railcars) of sand per week to St. Louis for manufac- turing bottles. When Mr. Duncan passed away in 1918, his wife took over and ran the business. Mrs. Harris (Duncan) ran the mine successfully through the depression and until, first, her children and, eventually, her grandson, took over. The Harris family continued to own and operate the mine un- til 1988, when it was purchased by Unimin. A new direction "The mine has evolved from using small ore cars to using large haul trucks now," says Mike Maloney, plant manager. "We've seen a lot of change over the years as technology has improved. Expectations are higher as the business has grown."
