Field studies for Atlas Copco's new FlexiROC T45 with fixed boom show that the unit uses half as much fuel as similar rigs using the same rock drill, depending on rock conditions. The COP 3060 rock drill mounted on a fixed boom and aluminum feed manages large diameters using the T60 drill string. During operation, the operator can adjust the airflow and the dust collector fan speed according to actual working demands. The speed of the engine and compressor are then adjusted automatically. It has 50 percent fewer hoses and 70-percent fewer couplings compared to similar rigs, the manufacturer says. It offers a choice of three different rock drills, a patented carousel rod changer, ergonomic cab, and other features to boost productivity and reduce operating costs. Compared to its predecessor, it has 18 percent more power, 19 percent faster tram speed, and 40 percent greater ground clearance. An au- tomated lube system eliminates the need to stop the machine for manual greasing every two hours. The rod changer and feed assembly have seven patents pending. Caterpillar | www.cat.com With the ability to be configured for reverse circulation, diameter rotary, diamond core, and down-the-hole drilling, Boart Longyear says its LC 6 is ideal for soil sampling in aggregate operations. A small footprint and fast setup allow for mobility and use in limited space. The drill features a Duetz air-cooled diesel engine that produces 96 horsepower with a maximum break- ing torque of 15,120 foot pounds and 5.5 tons of pullback. It can drill up to 460 feet in depth, using a 4-inch dual tube RC string. It can also be equipped with an automatic soil pressure test unit for geotechnical investigations.
