It will feature super spindle, tall spin- dle, and vertical axe apple planting systems, equip- ment innovations for improving labor efficiency, new pest management technology, fertigation, weed management, and growing sweet cherries in Orleans and Niagara counties in western New York. About 250 growers are expected to join Cornell University researchers and extension educators on the tour, which starts at 7:45 a.m. at Lamont Fruit Farm (Rod Farrow) near Waterport. The tour moves on to the Appleton area, visiting Staples Fruit Farm (Tom Staples), Russell Farms (Peter Russell), and Jesson Farm (Mark Russell and Jill MacKenzie), and then goes to New Royal Orchards (Alan, Tim, and Dennis Buhr) at Gasport. A sponsored barbecue lunch will be served at Russell Farms, where platforms are used in both high-density and lower-density plantings. The tour is free, but visitors must preregister.
