Truckers are five times more likely
than the general population to carry
hepatitis C virus (HCV), a danger-
ous blood-born infection that can
live in the body for up to 40 years
with no symptoms.
To educate truck drivers about
HCV and encourage them to get test-
ed, the Healthy Trucking Association
and its partners, OraSure Technolo-
gies and AbbVie, announced
the Truckers Rolling Against
Hepatitis C initiative at The
Great American Trucking
Show in Dallas.
OraSure's OraQuick HCV
Rapid Test, approved by the
Food and Drug Administra-
tion, is designed to provide
lab-accurate results with a fin-
ger-stick blood sample in just
20 minutes, with 90 percent
accuracy.
HTAA will announce addi-
tional testing locations at truck
stops, fleets and clinics that
serve the trucking community.
Even truck drivers who have
routine physicals with blood-
work should consult with their
doctors since HCV testing is
not always standard practice.

RULES TO REQUIRE speed
limiters on trucks and to
increase the minimum insurance
requirements for carriers from
$750,000 both were sent last
month to the U.S. Department of
Transportation. Both rules still
would need to go to the White
House's Office of Management
and Budget, then to the Federal
Motor Carrier Safety Administra-
tion for publication as Notices of
Proposed Rulemaking.
