Ben Martin breaks through for his fi rst
win on the PGA Tour
I've written about Ben Martin before and
have interviewed him a few times ever since I
became aware of his strong family connections
to Tuscaloosa.
So it was with interest that I watched him
break through for his first PGA Tour win Sunday
in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in
Las Vegas, Nev.
In fact, it was a Tuscaloosa 1-2 as Martin won,
with Kevin Streelman in second, two back of
Martin. Streelman is married to Courtney Ca-
ples, who grew up in Tuscaloosa and her family
still lives there. After the terrible tornadoes in
2011, Streelman, and fellow PGA Tour players
with strong Tuscaloosa and University of Ala-
bama connections, Dicky Pride and Jason Bohn,
organized a golf event at Indian Hills CC to raise
money to help families and communities affect-
ed by the devastation. Courtney Streelman was
in charge of the event's planning and execution.
You just never know with golf, as the previ-
ous week Martin really struggled at the Frys.
com Open and only beat one player, missing the
cut by a mile.
He turned it all around the very next week, as
he took the lead into the final round and shot a
Jim Martin, Billy Horschel and Ben Martin tailgate at this
year's Alabama-Florida game. Martin joined Horschel as a
winner on the PGA Tour on Sunday.
