Voices 6 | Overdrive | November 2014 Four-wheelers, take heed of this digital high- way message from the Iowa DOT. You can grab their construction/traffic updates and more via the @statewideia511 Twitter feed, or follow us – @OverdriveUpdate on Twitter, where we share reports from across the nation. Just don't peek at that screen until you're parked! Wake-up call Remember the "Red Rover" playground game? The class would split into two teams and hold hands across from each other, forming a chain. Each side took turns calling someone over, and that person would try to break through the opposite chain. If the runner failed, he or she stayed with the opposing side. If the runner broke through, he or she got to take someone from the other side to theirs. The team with the longest chain at the end of recess won. Of course, no one plays the game anymore. since children evolved into such delicate little creatures and the Politically Correct Brainworm took over. Dear parents: We will no longer play "Red Rover." Our staff psychologist has deter- mined the inability of some children to "break through" may be carried over into their personal lives and they might begin to feel bad about themselves. Sincerely, Principal McFeely I was reminded of Red Rover when George got a call from an agent who wanted him to do a grocery load to a Walmart distribu- tion center. He told her the only way he'd touch it is if she added $1,500, because he was going to have to burn a day delivering it and wouldn't even try to book another load until it was off because you never know when you're going to get stuck at a grocery dock for 20 hours. "What'd she say?" "She offered me $250. Which is about what the lumper fee is over there. She was pretty good – she said she called me because I was one of their preferred drivers who was always professional and on time." "Aww, yeah. She was selling it. She wants George Parker to break on through the Walmart chain and bring them over to her side." "I have no idea what you're talking about, but don't fool yourself. Agents are salespeople." "What are you going to do if she calls you back and agrees?" "I'm going to do the load." "Will you take me home first?" "No." I didn't hit the chain hard enough, and realized I might have to stick with the other side. A life les- son from first grade that didn't ruin my psychologi- cal state. Yay. Wendy Parker chronicles her journey on the road with her owner-operator husband, George, in the George and Wendy Show blog on OverdriveOnline.com. Red Rover, Red Rover, send George right over Kent: So, did she call back with the $1,500 or not? If she did, George left $$$ on the table! Wendy: No, she didn't. He knew she wouldn't. There's too many people out there who don't know the deal yet and that they can get to do it cheap for one turn.
