COMMERCIAL CARRIER JOURNAL | NOVEMBER 2014 11 JOURNAL NEWS T ruck tonnage was unchanged in September from August and remains at a record high, according to the American Trucking Associations' monthly seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index, released last month. Compared to the same month last year, the index rose 3.7 percent, down slightly from August's 4.5 percent year-over-year gain. The not season- ally-adjusted index – a representa- tion of the change in tonnage actu- ally hauled – rose 1.7 percent from August, however. ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said that based on the mix of other economic indicators in the month, such as falling retail sales and increas- ing factory output, no change in truck tonnage is unsurprising. 2014's third-quarter average also was the highest on record, Costello said, following a second-quarter jump of 2.4 percent from the first quarter and a 4 percent surge in the third quarter from the second quarter. Trucking serves as a barometer of the U.S. economy, representing 69.1 percent of tonnage carried by all modes of domestic freight trans- portation, including manufactured and retail goods, according to ATA. Trucks hauled 9.7 billion tons of freight in 2013, and motor carri- ers collected $681.7 billion, or 81.2 percent of total revenue earned by all transport modes. ATA calculates the tonnage index based on surveys from its member- ship and has been doing so since the 1970s. The report includes month- to-month and year-over-year results, relevant economic comparisons and key financial indicators. – Jeff Crissey Professional Grade Performance Since 1920 1 st in Series, Limited Edition! when you purchase 6 bottles of Howes Products See stores for details or visit www.howeslube.com Offer ends: 3/31/15, available while supplies last.
