Call for: USApple names new leaders T he U.S. Apple Associa- tion named new offi- Dale Foreman Gerard Bentryn cers and directors during its annual outlook and marketing conference in Chicago. The new chair is Dale Foreman of Foreman Fruit and Land Company, Wenatchee, Washington. He takes over from Julia Baehre Rothwell, from Belding Fruit Storage in Belding, Michigan. Bill Dodd, with Fruit Growers Marketing Association in Newcomerstown, Ohio, becomes vice chair. He was secretary. That position now goes to Chris Britton, with BK Partners in Modesto, California. John Graden, with Dovex Fruit Company in Kirkland, Washington, continues as treasurer. Also on the board are: Tony Blattner, with Twin Bee Orchards in Lowell, Michigan; Lee Peters, with Fowler Brothers Farms in Wolcott, New York; Jeff Columbini, from Lodi Farm- ing in Stockton, California; Mark Nicholson from Red Jacket Orchards in Geneva, New York; and Dan Boyer, Ridgetop Orchards in Fishertown, Pennsylvania. Joe Klein, from Royal Klein and Sons in Sparta, Michigan, stepped down from the board after several years of service. s Puget Sound wine award T he Puget Sound Wine Growers Association in Washington State has awarded the first- ever Puget Sound American Viticulture Area Legacy Award to Gerard Bentryn. He received the award during the association's annual viticulture conference in recog- nition of his pioneering vision, perseverance, and promotion of viticulture and enology in the Puget Sound AVA, Gerard and his wife, Jo Anne, own Bainbridge Island Vineyards and Winery and have produced estate-grown grapes on Bainbridge Island for over 38 years. They are noted for their support of pairing local foods to local wines, their development of viticultural prac- tices specific to Puget Sound, and for helping to introduce grape varieties such as Madeleine Angevine, Siegerrebe, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir to the area. The award was presented by association vice president Ron Irvine of Vashon Winery and association president Brent Charnley of Lopez Island Vineyards. For more information, check the PSWGA Web site at pugetsoundwine.org. s Bob Woehler, 1932—2011 B ob Woehler, a journalist who devoted much of his career to writing about Washington State viticulture and wines, died August 24, shortly after his 79th birthday. He was born in Hamilton, Montana, and lived also in Alaska and Washington State during his youth. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after graduating from Kennewick High School in 1950 and served in the Korean War. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in communi- cation from the University of Washington and after graduating worked at the Tri-City Herald. He became interested in the Washington wine industry in the late 1970s while covering agriculture for the Herald. He wrote passionately about wines for more than 30 years, continuing after he retired as a reporter in 1994. He was a founding columnist of the Wine Press Northwest, which began in 1998. He received the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers' Industry Service Award in 2007. Woehler is survived by his wife, Joyce, daughters Judith and Rebecca, and sons Andrew and Thomas.
