playAround Town in Middleton Exploring Madison's next door neighbor Farm Fresh: Weekday Edition! For a mid-week opportunity to stock up on fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies, head to Middleton's Tuesday Farmers' Market, located on Terrace Avenue from 3-6:30 p.m., and open every week through October. Summer may be sneaking out the back door, but there's no reason it should run off with your urge to explore. Create your own adventure close to home in Middleton. Once simply a suburb, the rapidly expand- ing city has stepped out from Madison's shadow and has even been recognized nationally for its family friendly vibe and natural getaways—nabbing the num- ber eight spot on Money Magazine's 2011 Best Places to Live report. Strolling up Parmenter Street, which cuts through the heart of downtown, the unique personal- ity of this Madison suburb quickly comes into focus. Tree-lined side- walks shade trendy shops boasting the latest styles while cozy cafés and hometown grills invite diners to pull up a seat and stay awhile. A bustling neighborhood that welcomes new shops and restaurants every year also offers a glimpse into the city's history. Th e Middleton of yesteryear grew around the railroad depot, and the Middleton of today keeps the original depot alive as a home for historic information. Connecting hot spots such as the zany National Mustard Museum, Capital Brew- ery and shopping hubs is a nationally recognized community trail system that brings both avid and novice outdoor enthusiasts together throughout the year. Not only a refreshing way to enjoy a day of traveling between Madison, Middleton and beyond, venture down the trails to quaint neighborhoods and colorful parks. Any outdoor journey through Middleton requires a stop at Pheasant Branch Con- servancy on the north side—a natural oasis where you can explore marshes, springs, prairies and meadows year round. From hiking on fall mornings to snowshoeing on crisp, winter days, the Conservancy offers a rustic escape just outside of downtown. Only minutes from Madison's doorstep, Middleton offers a quaint, family-orient- ed retreat with local ambiance and natural landscapes that can't be found anywhere else. —Jenny Bauer September 2011 bravamagazine.com 63 Photo by Shanna Wolf
