cultural customers has a "crisis" such as a lower than normal yield from their fields. "Farmers' technology can tell farmers in real time if the field is not yielding as well as a field across the road," Downey thinks. "If the issue points to water, then they're calling us to do testing." A good idea Many contractors admit preventive maintenance is not a service they currently offer but probably should. "The crazy thing about our industry is you're so busy put- ting out fires so to speak and keeping everything busy. You don't always look at the maintenance side of things whether it's a domestic or municipal well," Downey observes. "It's a good idea to get those things in place because it's constant income." Preventive maintenance is most common on industrial and municipal systems, but Lane has found some of his residential customers appreciate annual checkups. "We do have some residential customers who just do not want to have a problem, and they're willing to pay for us to do that service," he notes. Plus, regular maintenance can give companies the opportu- nity to test the water to see if anything has changed, like min- eral content. It's a chance to offer additional services such as water softening, iron removal, or ultraviolet disinfection. "It's less than common, but it's something we wish we would have set up years ago," Lane admits. "It's a good thing to keep our company in the forefront of our customers' minds.
