Homemade heavy hauler
Randy Harris of Corsicana, Texas, rebuilt this 1996 Peterbilt
377 a few years ago into a heavy hauler, adding special
inserts, a new steer axle, a new transmission, a fourth axle, a
double-locking fifth wheel and a nine-ton winch. Harris hauls
construction equipment such as cranes, loaders, excava-
tors and drills. He pulls seven-axle beam trailers, "making a
total of 11 axles," he says. The truck is powered by a 3406E
Caterpillar and a 10-speed transmission.
In 'the ideal place'
Oilfield equipment hauler Jay Aid says his home in Lake
Charles, La., is "the ideal place" for what he does with his
2010 Peterbilt 379, as he's only two hours from Houston. He
hauls three different trailers, including a step deck, a double-
drop with a detachable neck and a stretch trailer that can
extend up to 96 feet.
