32 • FEBRUARY 2015 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Ghost House project wins CLFMI Les Grube Memorial Design Award The Chain Link Fence Manufac- turers Institute (CLFMI) announced that the 2014 Les Grube Memorial Design Award has been presented to architect Michele Cetera, AIA, and the 458 Construction and Fence Company for their work on the Ghost House project at Randall's Island, N.Y. The Ghost House is a public sculpture commissioned for Randall's Island Park by the New York City Department of Parks in part- nership with the Bronx Museum of the Arts. The concept for Ghost House originates with artist Wilfred Smith's Fences Furniture sculp- tures, a series of furniture con- structed entire- ly of chain link fence. Ghost House expands this concept to delineate the entire home, inspired by the many baseball backstops in Randall's Island Park. The sculpture uses the material to create a delicate three-dimensional "drawing" of a house executed in wo- ven steel wire and pipe. Ghost House has a footprint of 18 by 24 feet, and stands 16 feet in height. Industry guidelines were followed in the design and detailing of the struc- ture, using standard chain link fence fabric, pipe, and fittings. All chain link products were do- nated and delivered on site to the proj- ect by Eastern Wholesale Fence Co., Inc. of Medford, N.Y. Park visitors are invited to use Ghost House for ball games, play, con- templation, or even live performance. The title for Ghost House pays homage to architect Philip Johnson's structure of the same name in New Canaan, Conn. The CLFMI Les Grube Design Award is named for Les Grube, a past president of the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute and a fence industry pioneer. The program is jointly funded by CLFMI and the Les Grube family. The award was established in 1984 during Grube's term as CLFMI pres- ident. He was instrumental in outlining the award's qualifications and estab- lishing connections with the architec- tural community to support the con- cept. The first award went to Pritzker Award-winning architect Frank Geh- ry for his design of the sign at Santa Monica Place. Over the years the award has been given to projects as diverse as the "liv- ing" façade of an airport facility to the design of a "slam dancing" night club in Tijuana. The 2013 award was won by el dorado inc. (de- signer) and the James H. Drew C o r p o r a t i o n (installer) for their work on the Broadway Overpass Proj- ect in Kansas City, Mo. Other win- ners include A r a i / J a c k s o n Architects, Se- attle, Wash; and Don M. Hisaka and Associates, Cambridge, Mass. Architects and contractors are encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible to be considered for the 2015 Award. For more information or to re- ceive an application form, contact Mark Levin at 301-596-2583 or via e-mail at info@chainlinkinfo.org. To qualify for the CLFMI Les Grube Memorial Design Award, the nominated project must employ an in- novative use of chain link fence mate- rials (fabric, framework, and/or gates) on a commercial or industrial project; be conceived by a professional archi- tectural or engineering firm; and be installed by a professional fence con- tractor. The winning architect and con- tractor each receive specially-de- signed plaques and cash awards of $2,500 for the designing architect and $1,000 for the installing contractor.
