AGGREGATES MANAGER February 2015 14 L afarge Canada Inc. has 10 active ag- gregate operations around Calgary, which include five mobile plants, two fixed wash plants, two mobile wash plants, and the company's flagship operation at Spy Hill. Spy Hill, a 640-acre property with a large fixed plant and several mobile plants, is located in the northwest corner of Calgary where a huge deposit of sand and gravel was left behind by glaciers thousands of years ago. All other major local producers also have gravel operations in the Spy Hill area, which makes this part of the city a key source for aggregates. While much of the construction materials industry in the United States experienced eco- nomic woes beginning in 2009, the Calgary area has been growing by leaps and bounds, both in population and in construction. Much of this growth can be attributed to the influx of people required to lead and run development in the oil sands of northern Alberta. The northwest corner of Calgary is developing quickly with both residential and commercial construction, which translates into an increased demand for construction materials.
