Based upon various federal government sources, it is esti- mated some 38.9% of the nation's population in 2010 de- pended upon groundwater for its drinking water source when accounting for groundwater use for drinking water from pub- lic supply systems and from individual household water well systems used by occupied households. 2 Previous estimates had put the percentage at closer to 44% in 2005. We subtracted 18% of the total estimated rural resident population of the United States to get the occupied household popu- lation. We used the American Housing Survey's estimated 13,093,000 occupied households on wells in 2011. We divided the total occupied rura l households population by the number of occupied households on wells to come up with a per household average number of people. We multiplied that average by the number of occupied household wells to come up with an estimate of the U.S. population actively using household wells' groundwater. The population for community water systems comes from the U.S. EPA's 2010 Factoids document. *These complimentary online brown bag sessions are only available to NGWA members.
