Voices 12 | Overdrive | March 2015 We shared photos of a few cabovers currently running and long-retired that readers offered up in response to a query about the COE-heavy past here in the States. Readers responded further by filling the Overdrive Reader Rigs gallery with pictures of classics. For more, search "classic cabovers" at OverdriveOnline.com. 7 classic cabovers In the garage | Reader greg Stanton started it all by asking this question – "Remember when truckers had to drive cabovers?" After we shared Stanton's pic of this sharp Freightliner COE and posted his ques- tion on the Facebook page, lo and behold, turns out drivers do well remember those days. For some, the negative tone of "had to drive" was a head-scratcher. "Drive mine every day," noted Don Porter, sharing a shot of his Peterbilt in the caves in Independence, Mo. Back In the Day | ken James' 1980 Kenworth K100 with "an eye-popping 180-inch wheelbase," he cracks, was the "first truck with my name on the registration." The unit was powered by a 380-hp Cat and 13-speed transmission. cuStOm claSSIc | Don Slate's 1986 International Eagle double-bunk, "with only 384,500 original miles on it," he says, just got a fresh coat of paint after it had faded over the years. "I can't wait for spring so I can start showing her at ATHS [American Truck Historical Society] truck shows." DOwn memOry lane | craig ryan's first truck, a 1965 Inter- national CO4000: "When I got it, it was 12 years old and looked every bit of that. I always thought it might have been an old Schneider truck, but wasn't sure. I lived just outside Green Bay. I was leased on to Dart Transit in St. Paul, Minn. It had a Cummins 250 with a 5-speed, a 2-speed rear end with a tag axle. Spring suspension, no power steering, no A/C, no radial tires. It broke down on my first trip, if I recall. At the time, I thought Dart treated me quite well – sorry I left for what I thought were greener pastures." On the Beach | What a shot! These two beauties are the 1978 and '79 Freightliners of John giarrusso Jr., who says this one shows a "little R&R on Daytona Beach" – the 1978 featured a 350 Cummins, the '79 a 400 Cummins, both with 13-speed transmissions. at the ShOw | Bruce roche still puts his 1991 Kenworth K100 to good use "occasionally on the road, and also to haul my antique tractors around to various shows and ag fairs. I purchased the truck in July 2006." It originally was owned by National Mobile Television in Torrance, Calif., he adds.
