The winner, who will be announced this month at the Mid-America Truck- ing Show in Louisville, Ky., will receive $5,000. The other two finalists also will receive cash prizes. Here's what gar- nered each driver recognition: Clinton Blackburn: Driving near Elizabethtown, Ky., Blackburn noticed a car suddenly pull into the median. He stopped and discovered Spencer County jailer Darrell Herndon being strangled from behind by a prisoner. Blackburn began struggling with the prisoner, who then pulled Herndon's gun from its holster. Blackburn was able to wrest the gun away and kept the prisoner at gunpoint. The prisoner then tried to drive away, but Blackburn and Herndon subdued him until help arrived. Mack Guffey: Guffey was driving near New York City when an SUV slammed into a guard rail, flipped and burst into flames. While fighting the flames with his fire extinguisher, Guffey tried unsuccessfully to reach through the broken windshield and grab the driv- er, who was severely injured and semi-conscious. Using his extinguisher, he smashed a side window and pulled the driver to safety. David Frederickson: Driving near Gulfport, Miss., Freder- ickson saw a car crash into a truck and catch fire. Frederickson repelled the flames with his extinguisher and reached the car's passen- ger side door. He removed the two passengers, including a woman with a broken leg. When firefighters reached the scene, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. – James Jaillet Goodyear Highway Hero finalists named
