Diversions 42 | Overdrive | March 2015 The fine art of truck stop life Longtime Overdrive readers will remember coverage of the 2010 flooding of Tennessee's Nashville TravelCenters of America down- town location and its subsequent rebuilding. It's getting atttention again, this time because of a visit from a fine-arts/documentary photographer. When Stacey Irvin of Nashville was tasked by Nashville Arts maga- zine to take part in the publication's "Nashville 6 a.m." series, she chose the TA as her subject. The series covers certain portions of the city at 6 a.m. on any given day, capturing life's less-seen routines. Irvin captured images not only of the good folks working the stop but also its customers on layover or grabbing a hot meal. She notes in the text accompanying the photo essay, available at NashvilleArts.com, that the project has inspired her to do more with the subject of trucking – specifically, "to pursue the truck stop as a longer-term project." Find more of Irvin's work at Stac- eyIrvin.com. – Todd Dills Stacey Irvin/Nashville Arts Search OverdriveOnline.com for links to Stacey Irvin's full series for Nashville Arts magazine, or visit NashvilleArts.com. Movie based on ex-trucker's struggles "A Most Violent Year," an ex-trucker's fight to keep his home heating oil delivery company alive amid truck hijackings and an investigation, opened in theaters this year to good reviews. New York City business owner Abel Morales (Oscar Issac) is weathering 1981, one of the city's worst crime years. Police offer little help as competitors steal loaded trucks and the Teamsters union urges arming the drivers. Meanwhile, the city's district attorney is investigating Morales' company for malfea- sance. Jessica Chastain, whom many movie critics believe was snubbed in Oscar nominations that ar- rived shortly after the movie's release, plays Morales' wife, Anna. Search the movie title at OverdriveOnline. com for the trailer. – Jill Dunn lore of elite niche turns into coMic A recent comic book release from builds on the notion of a "Ghost Fleet" of "elite com- bat-trained truckers" hauling no-touch, no-look cargo. One of them "takes a forbidden peek" and "uncovers a conspiracy that will change his life forever!" The story's genesis involves what writer Donny Cates learned from interviewing truckers about the arms, ammunition and explosives niche, among other security-sensitive freight. Cates' grandfa- ther was a trucker. David Hollis, at the Overdrive sister site TruckersNews. com, interviewed Cates about his work. According to Hollis, you might think of Ghost Fleet as a sort of "X-Files" on 18 wheels. – Todd Dills Full of "action on the open road," the Ghost Fleet comic book is available for order via online retailers and from the publisher, DarkHorse.com.
