National Coffee Association's annual National Drinking Trends Survey 2014 Use among elderly adults, which register the largest percentage of coffee consumption, declines with age and youthful drinkers seeking caffeine often choose energy drinks, according to Allen Whitehouse, of Kraft Foods, who pre- viewed the findings for attendees at the National Coffee Association's annual gathering. More Americans drink coffee than tap water (54%) which is up 7% and soda (41%) which experienced a dramatic decline of 9% since 2013. Tea was the past day drink of choice of 44% of those surveyed. Sports and energy drinks and energy shots appeal to 14% of the population, mainly young. Past day drinkers average 3.4 cups a day and most (51%) drink a 5 oz. to 8 oz. cup with 16% drinking less than 3 oz. (espresso serving). Older coffee drinkers (65+) are most likely to prepare coffee at home (96%) while only 70% of those under 24 prepare coffee at home. Out of home consumption is highest (45%) among those 18-24. Traditional ground roast drip coffee is in decline with only 53% of those making coffee at home using a drip brewer. The study was first conducted in 1950. Historically the number of past day coffee drinkers is in decline with a recent low under 50% in 2004 from nearly 80% in 1954. The 79% percent of the population who drink coffee on occasion (at least once in the past year) has held steady during past five years ranging from 77% in 2010 to 83% in 2013. The percent of those drinking gourmet coffee rose from 24% in 2010 to 34% in 2014. Most choose premium coffee (19%) but 6% reported drinking a cappuccino yesterday; 5% drank a latte and 5% a frozen blended coffee while another 5% drank an espresso and 5% café mocha. Other preparations include Americano (4%) café con leche (3%) and macchiato (2%). Only 7% of Americans drink their coffee cold or frozen while 95% prefer their coffee hot.
