The group offers its members support in working towards sustainability certifica- tion, providing an "entry-level standard." Many of its members go on to meet the more stringent requirements of other certifiers. It has been six years since the last time 4C revised its compliance criteria. 4C certification requires compliance with 28 social, environmental and economic standards. To comment on the 4C code visit: www.4c-coffeeassociation.org US Café Category Growth Technomic Inc., a consulting and research firm serving the food industry, reported that while growth overall declined in restaurants those offering limited-service remained strong with 9% sales growth for the year. Burger chains contracted while fast-casual grew 11% in sales and a 8% increase in units. The segment leader for specialty cafe was Starbucks with an increase in traffic and average ticket ($5) leading to same-store growth. Dunkin' Donuts was next at 3.4% year-over-year growth. "Although we have seen overall growth within the Top 500, the pace has slowed since last year," said Ron Paul, President of Technomic. "Competition for share of stomach is getting more and more challenging. But brands that have found a way to differentiate themselves are gaining market share." Technomic reported 26,500 cafes in the category of which 11,400 are operated by Starbucks or its licensed partners. Only 5,000 cafes and small chains are run by independent operators. The estate was planted by Pioneer Mill Company, one of the last sugar plantations in Hawaii. Ka'anapali Estate Coffee (KEC) stopped operations shortly after Pioneer Mill Company closed.
