state or federal officials if the accident is found to have resulted from any flagrant violation of workplace safety requirements. Then finally, there is the cost of the damage to the company's reputation. If potential customers hear you have had serious accidents on your job sites, they may no longer believe you are a rep- utable firm and take their business else- where. So Why Doesn't Everyone Practice It? If we know all of the above, the question seems to be not why do we bother doing it, but why doesn't everyone do it? It is easily proven that safety is just good business. It is easily observed workers do not want to be in- jured. It is easily shown safety programs will reduce the occurrence of injuries. So with all of this obvious informa- tion, why are there still so many busi- nesses out there who do not place the highest priority on having a safe work- place? I believe the answer is many business owners have never taken the time to sit down and consider this issue. In addi- tion, I don't believe the effectiveness and simplicity of a basic health and safety plan are understood universally. And finally, I don't believe those in the position to make these changes recognize changes need to be made. I honestly believe most managers and owners have enormous respect and admiration for their employees. I also believe the safety message gets lost somewhere along the way. In an effort to try and satisfy upper management, many workers will assume production trumps all. It is true profit is important, but also true a safer workplace leads to higher profits. In summary, safety pays. It's good business. It's vital for company owners and industry leaders to make sure each and every worker hears and understands this message!
