96 | Overdrive | May 2015 What to do 1 Quickly find a place to stop away from traffic, even if it's just on the shoulder, but stay clear of build- ings, trees, overpasses, underpasses and utility wires. 2 Shut down, and turn on your hazard lights. 3 Stay in your rig, listening to the radio and CB for road condi- tions and warnings. 4 Once you learn your area is stable, proceed slowly, especially at night. 5 Be on the lookout for cracked roads, damaged bridges or ramps, fires at ruptured gas lines and other dangers. 6 Do not drive over downed power lines. W hen your peaceful drive gets interrupted by severe vibrations or worse, you could be driving through an earthquake. Truckers who've driven in one say it feels like something's wrong with your truck. Another clue of a pos- sible quake is seeing cars pulling over to the side of the road. Once it's over – well, it might not be really over. There could be aftershocks, causing the ground to shake, crack or fault even further. If you're in a mountainous area, beware of mud- slides.
