After earning a doctor- ate in plant breeding and genetics from the Univer- sity of Wisconsin in 1982, Dr. McFerson worked as a vegetable breeder for a seed company. He was research geneticist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Serv- ice at Cornell University in Geneva, New York, from 1989 until joining the Research Commission. He has been a director of the Pear Bureau Northwest since 2004 and served on the Fresh Pear Committee from 2005 to 2009. He was chair of both organizations from 2007 to 2009. He has also served as president of the Yakima Valley Growers-Shippers Association. Kevin Moffitt, president of the Pear Bureau Northwest, has described Woodin as a visionary and strong chairman with a balanced approach to issues of importance to the industry. s Women's leadership, science r. Kate Evans, apple and pear breeder with Washing- ton State University in Wenatchee, received the Women's Leadership Through Science Award from the Washington State Horticultural Association. Evans joined WSU in 2008 with the principle role of leading the apple breeding program, but is also collabo- rating nationally and internationally. She began working as an apple and pear breeder at East Malling Research in the United Kingdom in 1992 after receiving a doctorate in plant molecular biology from Durham University. s Women's leadership, service H eather Hansen, executive director of Washington Friends of Farms and Forests since 1997, received the Women's Leadership Through Service Award. She serves on the steering committee of Growers for ESA Transparency (GET), a coalition of growers throughout the western United States committed to improving the consultation process for the Endangered Species Act. Hansen also manages her own government-relations firm specializing in agricultural, natural resource, and tax issues at the state and federal levels. She serves on the advisory board of the William D.
