www.urban-forestry.com 35 Silk floss tree, also known as palo borracho (Chorisia speciosa) origi- nates from South America. It´s drought tolerant and can tolerate moderate cold. It can grow up to 25 m (82 feet) in height. Its trunk is said to be bottle shaped, because it bulges at the bottom, and is covered in thick spines which serve to store water for dry times. It blooms in the fall here, covered with stunning pink and white hibiscus-family flowers. Goldenrain tree, also called papelillo (Koelreuteria paniculata) originates from China, Korea, and Japan. It´s a beautiful ornamental tree that is tolerant of pollution and poor soils. Goldenrain tree is fittingly named for its showers of showy yellow flowers that bloom in the summer followed by distinctive papery pinkish fruits in the fall. It has a very deep, non-invasive root system. It can reach the height of 12 m (39 feet). An ele- gant medium-sized urban tree.
