Face the Facts: Healthy Cosmetic Dos When it comes to beauty rules, it's hard to keep track of all the dos and don'ts. Beauty and style expert Kati Corbett of Be Inspired Salon suggests a few simple guidelines that do more than just keep you looking radiant—they protect your health Clean your makeup brushes once per week. Protect your wal- let and your face by cleaning your makeup brushes regularly. Not only will they last longer and save you from buying a new set, you'll save your face from breakouts associated with bacteria and oil that builds up on brush bristles. Replace your products. While it seems like cosmetics can last for- ever, bacteria can build up over time, especially in your eye makeup. Change your mascara and eyeliner every four to six months. Eye shadow can last a bit longer, about a year. But if at any point you develop an eye infection like conjunctivitis or pink eye, immediately throw away makeup that has come in contact with your eyes. Wash your face before bed. Cleansing before bed is imperative for your skin because the process of cell renewal takes place at night. Avoiding your nightly washing means makeup, dirt and oils could clog your pores, leading to breakouts or increased sensitivity the following day. It seems counterintuitive, but unwashed skin can also dry out sensitive areas, such as the delicate skin around the eyes. Not caring for this area on a consistent basis can lead to premature aging—and nobody wants that. December 2011 bravamagazine.com 15
