UNIFIED WINE & GRAPE SYMPOSIUM UNIFIED WINE & GRAPE SYMPOSIUM EXHIBITOR SURVEY Wine industry suppliers express optimism for 2012 By Tina Caputo, editor-in-chief e all know it's been a tough few years for the Nor th Amer ican wine industry, but it appears that indus- try suppliers are feeling more opti- mistic about 2012. Vineyard & Winery Management surveyed exhibitors from the 2011 Unified Wine & Grape Symposium trade show to find out how their businesses fared last year, and to see how they're feeling about 2012. We received 105 responses from as many exhibitors, and their answers indicate that despite the challenges on the horizon, things appear to be looking up. The majority of our survey partic- ipants – about 67% – are suppliers of winery equipment and supplies, while 18% are suppliers of vine- yard equipment and supplies. The remainder offer a variety of servic- es to the industry, including legal, financial, academic, marketing and public relations. The vast majority of respondents – 71% – reported that their sales improved in 2011 over 2010, while 19% said that sales held steady. Just under 10% reported a decline in sales. Of suppl iers repor t ing an increase, 48.1% said their sales grew by a modest 5%-10% over 2010. Of those who saw a decrease in sales in 2011, 60% reported a decline of 5%-10%, while 20% reported a significant decrease of 21%-40%. A confident 25.7% said they are "solidly opti- mistic," and 4.8% reported being "extremely optimistic." Just 7.6% said they are "not very optimistic" about the industry's health in 2012.
