Major Environmental Laws - This page provides direct access to the major environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act. Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) - This is the main federal law that ensures the quality of Americans' drinking water. Clean Water Act (CWA) - In 1972, Congress enacted the first comprehensive national clean water legislation in response to growing public concern for serious and widespread water pollution.
