Sen. Barbara Boxer (D- Calif.), DRIVE Act sponsor and long-time advocate of robust highway funding, said the goal was for the bill to come before the full Senate prior to the July 31 expiration of the current 60-day funding stopgap measure, instead of having to pass another patch. "The time to act is now so that Congress can provide states and local communities with the certainty they deserve in rebuilding our roads and infrastructure," Boxer said. "We will be working with Sen- ate leadership to bring this bill to the Senate floor before the Highway Trust Fund expires at the end of July." Funding for the bill, however, remained the major question mark facing the Lawmakers struggle with highway funding DRIVE Act. EPW's clearance is one hurdle, but the bill could face stiffer odds in the Senate's Appropriations Committee, the group of lawmakers responsible for determining the bill's funding mechanism. The House also has a version of the DRIVE Act in the works. It was intro- duced earlier this year but has seen no action. – James Jaillet MOTOR CARRIERS trans- porting security-sensitive radioactive materials for the U.S. Department of Energy were granted a two-year break ex- emption by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The exempted drivers will be allowed to use 30 minutes or more of on-duty attendance time to meet the hours of ser- vice rest break requirements provided they do no other work during the break.
