54 | Overdrive | July 2015 Overdrive-Red Eye Radio s T hree truckers who spend their down- time singing and writing songs will compete this August at The Great American Trucking Show, where the Dallas-bound drivers have been invited to the fi nals of Overdrive-Red Eye Radio's Trucker Talent Search. They will perform Aug. 28, hosted by truck driver and recording artist Tony Justice, who will also perform. A panel of judges will pick a winner, who will receive $1,000. Nate Moran, Paul Mar- hoefer and Don Whatley were selected after audience online voting in May and June. Stay tuned to Red Eye Radio to hear interviews with each art- ist before GATS, Aug. 27-29. Three musicians headed to Dallas Nate Moran Song he submitted: Michael Ray's "Kiss You in the Morning" About the song: "I love how it reminds me of my wife. I sang this to her at our wedding on April 4, 2015." Nate Moran, 25, of Pomona, Calif., is a company driver for Smokey Point Distrib- uting, hauling freight for the aerospace industry. He picked up the guitar at 11 after his father died on a hunting trip. "Losing my dad got me into music, and music kept me out of trouble," he says. "If I didn't fi nd music, I would have gone down the wrong road, most likely." After playing guitar for a few years, he started singing, and that led to songwriting. "It just started coming to me, bits and pieces here and there," he says. Moran didn't get serious about writing until a few years ago. About that time, he also started trucking. Nate Moran has recorded and released two songs on Amazon and iTunes. He hopes to follow "Middle of the Moonlight" and "Honey Drop" with more recordings this year.
