Bridging the Municipal and Utility Gap
H
ow many municipal arborists can say they enjoy
a partnership with their local utility? Although
both branches of arboriculture share similar goals
of public safety and service, it often takes a great deal of
education and advocacy on both sides to bridge the gap.
The contracted arborists of ArborMetrics Solutions, Inc.
(AMS) are there to help build those bridges.
Here's a good example: In Indiana, AMS works under the
leadership of Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO)
to help communities in its service territory practice the
"Right Tree, Right Place, Right Way" philosophy. With tree
plantings and educational events in 25 communities since
2011, AMS helps to communicate NIPSCO's resolve to
work with municipal arborists, city tree boards, homeowners
and children for a better environment and safe, reliable
electric power. These events engage citizens in preventing
inappropriate plantings before they occur.

ArborMetrics arborists
like hands-on projects
like Arbor Day and fall
planting events to build
community support
of both municipal and
utility initiatives.
ArborMetrics staff can be found
serving on state urban forestry
councils and arborist associations,
working to build networks of partners.
Frequent presenters, the ArborMetrics
staff also promote ecology through
technology and communication.
Through these efforts and assistance with applications,
AMS has also helped both utilities and cities attain and
keep Tree City USA and Tree Line USA designations
through the Arbor Day Foundation.
"These projects have allowed us to work with cities,
non-profits, schools, faith organizations, other utilities and
government agencies. We've worked with everyone from
pre-K students to the elderly," says Andrea Nichols, an
AMS arborist contracted with NIPSCO. Building bridges
with trees and education results in communities and
utilities working together for a better future.
