CORRIDOR BRIEFS Cultivating Tomorrow's Corridor partners at Florida Hospital's Nicholson Workforce Basic algebra and chemistry aren't always exciting for the average middle school student. That's why the Florida High Tech Corridor Council developed its workforce initiative, techPATH, back in 1998 to create the link between fun high tech careers and the skills young students need to learn to be prepared for technology-focused jobs of the future. Through techPATH's workshop series called techCAMP, teachers can explore different industry sectors by spending a day at high tech companies, and then bring back their excitement to share with students. techPATH's programs this year expanded the curriculum offerings by hosting a techCAMP focused on robotics and expanded the service area by hosting its first-ever program in Highlands County. Center for Surgical Advancement hosted the new Robotics techCAMP allowing students to engage in hands-on robotics demonstrations, learn about robotics programming and understand how this technology is integrated in real- world careers. Nicholson Center Executive Director Rick Wassel has supported techPATH by welcoming students and teachers alike to tour the facility including the da Vinci Robot suites, which utilize robotic technology to perform minimally invasive surgeries. In its 14 years, techPATH has delivered 75 programs to more than 2,700 teachers and students across the Corridor region. Cultivating tomorrow's workforce in our Corridor starts by inspiring students of today. www.floridahightech.com/techpath.php Connecting Entrepreneurs with the Tools They Need to Thrive For entrepreneurs, part of the challenge of starting or growing a small business is knowing where to turn for help. Thanks to the Florida High Tech Corridor Council's Florida Virtual Entrepreneur Center, that help is just a mouse-click away. The Florida Virtual Entrepreneur Center online techPATH's year began in Highlands County with Math & Physics Day, a techCAMP for students. Hosted at South Florida Community College (SFCC) in Avon Park, nearly 30 Sebring Middle School students got an up-close look at high tech careers and the opportunity to participate in physics demonstrations and experiments. A tour of SFCC's Public Service Academy's simulation facilities showed the students some of the many applications of the modeling, simulation and training industry. Math & Physics Day programs can be held in any county of the Corridor and are free for school district participants. 06 florida.HIGH.TECH 2012 portal at flvec.com connects entrepreneurs with the tools needed to start, expand or relocate a business. Completely free and easy to use, the site provides access to a host of governmental and commercial services including law, accounting, IT and communications, as well as the latest information on business permitting, regulations, tax incentives, funding sources and more. "The FLVEC database is a fantastic tool that lets entrepreneurs know there are people out there willing to help," said Matthew Imhoff, vice president of business development for EquityNet, a provider of business analysis and planning software. "We've seen great success with entrepreneurs that found our business planning and funding tool via the FLVEC. Every county in Florida, as well as every state should have a tool like FLVEC." In its sixth year, the Florida High Tech Corridor Council- sponsored FLVEC has grown to serve entrepreneurs in all
