Business Management A Best Practices Manual for Outreach and Education to Private Well Owners Tuesday, December 15 4:15–5:15 p.m. A manual for field practitioners who work with private well owners was de- veloped to provide suggestions, ideas, and best practices for engaging and edu- cating private well owners. The manual was developed based on interactions with nearly 100 sanitarians, educators, and groundwater professionals who work with private well owners on a daily basis. The manual provides an ap- proach to running an outreach program, as well as discusses how to overcome common barriers we all face in dealing with private well owners who may not understand the importance of their well. Presenters: Steven D. Wilson and Lucinda Morris, University of Illinois DACUM Codes: DOA3, DOA5, DOJ8, DOK12, DOK5, DOL9, PIA3, PIA4, PIG10, PIG12 America's Dependence on Groundwater: Market Segment Trends in a Changing Market- place Tuesday, December 15 9:15–10:15 a.m. The United States extracts 76 billion gallons per day of fresh groundwater for public supply, private supply, irrigation, livestock, manufacturing, mining, ther- moelectric power, and other purposes. Irrigation accounts for the largest use of groundwater in the U.S.—about 65% of all that is pumped from the subsurface each day. However, throughout many of the western states relying heavily upon groundwater for irrigation, there are growing competing demands for the water to develop energy resources, sus- tain ecological systems, as well as to supply urban population centers. This presentation examines the national trends in groundwater use, as well as some of the implications for groundwa- ter use from shifting populations and competing demands for water. A new database compiled by the National Ground Water Association will be presented. Presenter: Kevin McCray, CAE, National Ground Water Association Collecting Payment for Work Performed Tuesday, December 15 10:30–11:30 a.m. All too often, the toughest part of the job is collecting what is owed. As a service provider, what steps should you take to collect payment from the time you estimate and bid a specific job, per- forming the actual work, and presenting the final invoice? This workshop will walk you through the steps you should take in each phase of the job or project. Presenter: TBA Customer Contracts Tuesday, December 15 3–4 p.m. A good contract ensures a service provider is paid for work performed and that the consumer receives the service agreed upon. A satisfied and paying cus- tomer is a valuable asset to any business from both a financial and public rela- tions standpoint. This session will address the stipulations a contractual agreement should contain and how best to explain the agreement to the customer.
