Don and Linda Mercer received the Industry Service award for their vision and dedication to the state's wine industry. Don and his father planted the state's first Cabernet Sauvignon grapes at Mercer Ranch Vineyards in Alderdale in 1972. A winery was added in 1985, but was closed five years later. In the early 1970s, Don helped found an irrigation district for the Horse Heaven Hills area and served as its first presi- dent. He has also served as president of Benton County Farm Bureau and president of the grape association, and helped found the Prosser Wine and Food Fair. Linda worked at Columbia Crest Winery for 17 years, was involved in the Columbia Valley Winery Association and Wine Yakima Valley, and was the first president of the Horse Heaven Hills Wine Growers. The Lifetime Achievement award was given posthu- mously to Glenn Coogan, 58, who died last September. Coogan was vice president of Northwest operations for Ascentia Wine Estates, responsible for winery operations at Columbia, Covey Run, and Ste. Chapelle wineries. He was vice chair of the Washington Wine Commission and chair of the Washington Wine Industry Foundation. Brian Charlton, general manager, and wine direc- tor Don Elsing were recognized for Sun Mountain's exten- sive Northwest wine cellar that lists 600 wine labels, 400 of which are from Washington. s Steve Warner New leader at Wine Commission teve Warner was hired by the Washington Wine Commission as executive director, following an international search for candidates. He joined the commission on March 12. Warner was the managing director of Merck & Company, Inc., in Bucharest, Romania, and has held managerial and marketing positions in the Asia Pacific region and the United States. He grew up in Seattle and served in the U.S. Air Force and Navy. He has a bachelor's degree in biology from East Tennessee State University and a master of busi- ness administration in international business and finance from Rutgers University. He succeeds Robin Pollard, who left in December 2011 after six years as executive director. s Bob McDougall, 1924–2012 ob McDougall, founder of the fruit growing and packing operation McDougall and Sons, Inc., died February 6, aged 87. McDougall had a 60-year career in the tree fruit industry. He grew up working in orchards in the Cashmere Valley and graduated from Cashmere High School before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Afterwards, he earned a bachelor's degree in English from Washington State University. He formed McDougall Orchards, Inc., in 1960 and served for 12 years, first as a representative and then as a senator, in the Washington State legisla- ture. In 1977, he joined with his sons Stuart and Scott to form McDougall and Sons, Inc., in Wenatchee and was company presi- dent until his retirement in 1998. He was one of the four founding members of Columbia Marketing International (CMI), which was established in 1989.
