SMA Member Publishes Urban Tree ID Guide SMA Member Kenneth Schoon, pro- fessor of science education at Indiana University Northwest (IUN), has written a gem, City Trees: ID Guide to Urban & Suburban Species. In the tree ID genre, it's a real trick knowing what to leave in, what to leave out. Schoon has hit upon a balance, providing a 112-page guide to 129 species, that is just the right heft for beginners. It would make an excellent training tool for stu- dents and volun- teers, and a thought- ful gift for your tree board members. Schoon, who grew up in Gary, Indiana, taught science in middle school for 19 years before his career teach- ing future science educators at IUN. He first had the idea for an urban tree ID guide when he was assigning his eighth graders leaf collections. Many of us in SMA remember our own leaf collection project with particular fondness. "That one assign- ment accomplishes so many objectives," says Schoon. "It makes students more aware of their home or school neighborhood. It teaches obser- vation, classification, and identification skills. It can also lead to discussions of energy, pollution, economics, and natural resources." Schoon's ID Guide includes a terrific introduction to urban forestry, a glossary of botanical terms, vivid photos of leaves, flowers, and seeds, and a species information section that includes a pronunciation guide. Schoon graciously identifies all the SMA Urban Trees of the Year here as well. For those of you in the temperate zones, this is a field guide that will rekindle your urge to go out and botanize. Schoon has recently retired from IUN and will have more time to pursue hobbies like Scottish dancing with his wife. We hope his retirement means more time for urban forestry related writing as well. —Michelle Sutton, City Trees Editor www.urban-forestry.com davey.com/urbanforestry • info@davey.com l m™ re with Manage ess…with Soil Moist™ without Mycorrhizal with Mycorrhizal Nothing helps stretch budgets like Soil Moist Water Management Polymers and Mycorrhizal Products: to reduce water maintenance and plant stress, increase growth rates, improve soil porosity and do more with less… beautifully.
