10 STiR tea & coffee industry international / Issue 5, 2015 (October/November) In Pod We Trust 2.0 Ross Colbert, managing director and global strategist for beverages at Rabobank International, presented a detailed report explaining trends in the coffee capsule seg- ment at the National Coffee Association hosted webinar Sept. 24. While sales of brewers slowed in the past year, household penetration in the US has increased to one-third. His presentation is available free on the NCA website. In Pod We Trust 2.0 identified single-serve as the fastest growing coffee segment globally where it is closing the gap with roast and ground coffee around the world. "Pods are not limited to developed markets," he told participants. The segment accounts for roughly 39% of total US value. Mintel International released a report estimating single-cup comprises 33.4% of volume in 2015 with 19.6% sales gain to earn $4.3 billion in the US. Coffee volume is actually decreas- ing as single-cup users consume significantly less coffee. Mintel estimates 81% growth from 2015-20 with sales of $7.75 billion in 2020. Cold Brew Retail sales of cold brew coffee in the US grew an estimated 115% from 2014/15. Sales are estimated at $7.9 million by Mintel International. About one quarter (24%) of coffee drinkers drink retail-purchased cold brew with male Millennials (age 21-38) showing the greatest interest. Despite its surge in popularity 58% of those surveyed who did not drink cold brew said they are not interested in trying it. The segment makes up 0.4% of ready-to-drink sales, according to Mintel. International Coffee Day Celebrated as a synchronized activity for the first time in 2015 International Coffee Day was heralded as a success. The International Coffee Organization coordinated 65 events hosted by dozens of coffee associations in 35 countries. The celebration included a charity drive coordinated with Oxfam. Coffee4Change raised funds for coffee farmers in Haiti, Honduras, Timor- Leste, and Papua New Guinea. A New York Coffee Festival marked the date and Colombia's FNC produced a video in which growers were asked how they envision their product is consumed around the world.
