delivers 199,400 hp each or a total of 2,991,000 hp, an increase of 39% above the original units! The typical total electricity pro- duction per year now averages 4.2 billion kilowatt hours. Try running your blender on one of these for a short time! The Myths • There are several workmen en- tombed in the dam. This rumor has travelled for years and let me assure you there is nobody buried in the concrete dam. Besides the potential damage a human body would cause for the curing concrete and "uncur- ing" body, the dam was only built a few inches at a time. • The dam was originally built only for power generation. The dam was always planned and built primarily for flood control. The addition of power generation equipment was for the purpose of providing revenue to pay back the cost of building the dam to the federal government. • Las Vegas receives all of the benefit from the dam. This is somewhat true on one hand and a myth on the other. Even though Las Vegas gets most of its water from Lake Mead, most of the power generated from the dam is transmitted and consumed in South- ern California through contracts negotiated in the first days. • The dam has always been called Hoover Dam. False. The original name for the dam was Boulder Dam, named for its presumed location. The name went back and forth between Boulder Dam and Hoover Dam for years until Congress passed a law in 1947 declaring the dam named for Herbert Hoover forever. If you have time during your trip to the Expo, I encourage you to visit the dam and bridge. You'll be glad you did. Until next month, work safe and smart.
