14 nJanuary 2016n www.thunderpress.net by Don Kline ONTARIO, CALIF., DEC. 6— December is the month for toy runs and there seem to be a lot of them going on this year. Looking at the events listed on social media and in publications I saw three other events listed in my area, but the one I always go to on the fi rst Sunday in December is the one put by on ABATE Local 19 and Pomona Valley H.O.G. The run takes place at the Ontario Elks Lodge on Fourth Street. Before I went to the run I rode my bike over to San Bernardino to have breakfast with ABATE Local 23 and see what they were up to at their 9:00 a.m. meeting which takes place at Vicky's Restaurant. I knew some of their members were doing a group ride to the Toy Run after the meeting. I left ahead of their group as the run started at 10:00 a.m. The weather was cold in the morning but soon warmed up as the day moved on. Riding down the San Bernardino Freeway was uneventful (the last few weeks there has been construction in the Fontana area on the weekends and it really backs up traffi c on the westbound side). After taking the Mountain Avenue south and a right on Fourth Street, there were cones set up in the front of the lodge and nice gentlemen pointing where to turn and where to park. I also got a smile on my face at the seeing the giant infl atable Santa on motorcycle. Once parked in the fenced motor- cycle parking-only area of the lodge, you went up to the registration tables where you signed in, paid the entry free, got your hand stamped and received a very nice run pin. Taking a look around to get the lay of the land, you see the bike show area is over in the northwest corner, next to them the band called Things Unseen was play- ing a variety of popular songs, then the emcee/DJ tent manned by Mike Morris of Stompbox Entertainment. Across from him over in the northeast corner was Santa and Mrs. Claus and the growing piles of toys and the bicycles for Santa Claus of Chaffey District Inc. Enough money was raised this year for them to receive 137 bicycles and helmets. On the east side in two rows were the 30 or so vendors. This area included the raffl e prize area. Speaking of raffl e prizes there were over 400 of them, in fact the run kept going after the 2:00 p.m. end time to 3:00 p.m. because they had so many to give away. The big prize was a 50" fl at-screen television won by David Camacho of Ontario. The winner of the opportunity drawing was Sandy Mistler of Covina who took home $244. The vendors included Pomona Valley Harley-Davidson, Mary Kay, Russ Brown, Willy Shiny Chrome, Hayden Enterprises, Black Sheep HDFC, Bar Enterprises, Bob's Biker Bits, CCC Knives, Eagle Sky Silver, Hand Popped Kettlecorn, Bon Bon treats, Tupperware and a couple of vendors selling clothing and acces- sories. I also saw Dave Dildine of the Law Tigers roaming around the run. Over at the Law Tigers booth I saw the Law Tiger ladies Alyshia and Bunnie. ABATE local 19 had a coin toss booth and an information booth set up. The Elks Lodge provided food and drinks including a buffet, and the bar was open for those wanting stronger bever- ages. There was also a barbecue going on. Part of the run is the bike show where 29 motorcycles were entered into nine classes including those deco- rated with a Christmas theme. Winners at the run were the Lifestyle Cycles Riding Group of Anaheim who showed up with 69 riders plus a PT Cruiser pulling a trailer full of toys—they got a cash prize of $275 for largest group attending. Also making an appear- ance was last year's winner, American Thunder, that last year donated 42 bicycles. Donations are accepted year- round with more information about donating available online.
