Despite the recent dominance of conglomerates, which continue to merge with and acquire one another, the beverage alcohol industry's strength is its family-owned retailers, wholesalers and suppliers. In our special "Generations" supplement (see page 27), four such retailers are profi led, each of which has survived at least three generations of family ownership. Also included is an in-depth look at fi ve generations of family control at Brown-Forman, which will soon see its sixth generation enter the workforce. Both winners of the 20th Annual Beverage Dynamics Retailer of the Year award (see page 14) are also multi-generational family businesses. Half Time Beverage, a beer retailer with two locations in New York, is run by the father-and-son team of Alan and Jason Daniels. At the 12-store Cork Liquors in Indiana, owner Warren Scheidt started in the industry with his parents Virgil and Bettie in 1982. His two children, Travis and Allison, have now joined the rapidly-expanding business and helped drive further growth. A GENERATIONAL SHIFT The beverage alcohol industry is notoriously slow to change. But as Millennial retailers, brand representatives and consumers gain infl uence, the momentum is certainly heading in the right direction. The craft beer and spirits movement, among other trends, shows that the drinking public has evolved - today's consumers crave authenticity, craftsmanship and a compelling story. Brands and retailers that demonstrate a passion for product and commitment to quality will thrive in this new era, while the relics of the past that don't adapt will fade to a distant memory. That's not to say we should forget our heritage. I believe we should celebrate our elders, who started and grew many of this industry's most successful businesses. But as we do that, we also need to recognize and embrace the generational shift happening throughout beverage alcohol. It's tremendously important that members of the younger generation learn from their parents and others who have built and strengthened the foundations for these businesses. But it's equally important that industry leaders allow contributions from the newcomers - by listening to feedback, changing broken or outdated ideas and encouraging innovation and risk-taking. From my experience speaking to industry members of all ages, I'm confi dent this process is well underway, leaving the beverage alcohol community poised for continued success in 2016 and beyond. That's something everyone can be proud of, across all generations. Jeremy Nedelka Editor Beverage Dynamics is seeking additional beer and wine review panelists for 2016.
