INDUSTRY NEWS NMMA: BOAT SALES UP 8 PERCENT FOR 2015 New powerboat sales are on a multi-year rise with pre-recession levels on the horizon in several boat segments as early as 2016, the National Marine Manufacturers Association reported. NMMA estimates new powerboat unit sales will be up as much as 8 per- cent in 2015 when the industry tallies its final figures. The NMMA anticipates the industry will continue its growth spurt with an increase in new powerboat sales of 6 to 8 percent in 2016. "A steadily improving economy and flurry of product innovation have boosted new powerboat sales, which is encouraging to see as we head into the winter boat show season, one of the busiest selling periods of the year," said Thom Dammrich, NMMA president. "We anticipate 6 to 8 percent growth in 2016 which would take total new powerboat sales back to pre-recession levels of 250,000 units." JOHNNY WALKER RESIGNS AS PRESIDENT OF BAJA MARINE John "Johnny" Walker has resigned as president of Baja Marine, parent company of the Pro-Line, Baja, Donzi, and Fountain brands, and will now serve the company as a special adviser to the board of directors. Daily operations for the boat brands are being managed by an executive team that includes several long-time veterans of the company. "Baja Marine is being led by the skilled, professional manufacturing and market- ing team we have built in North Carolina," Walker said. In 2010, Walker oversaw moving the Pro-Line and Donzi brands to their cur- rent 250,000-square foot manufacturing facility in Washington, N.C., where they joined the Baja and Fountain brands. "My mission for the past five years has been to get production up and run- ning on the boat brands in North Carolina and to rebuild our international dealer network. We have successfully accomplished that," Walker said. "Baja Marine has a healthy order book for its consumer and government/commercial boat lines and it has financially solvent, highly engaged dealer partners in place in the U.S., Canada, South America, Europe and Asia." Walker joined Pro-Line Boats in 1991, and in 2007 was named general man- ager of the company. In 2009, he was appointed COO of American Marine Holdings (AMH), which consisted of Pro-Line Boats and Donzi Marine. The following year, Walker was named president of AMH and transitioned the com- pany to the former Fountain production facility in Washington, N.C. In 2012, when Baja Marine acquired the assets of Pro-Line, Donzi and Fountain, Walker was named president.
