Th is modern kitchen focal point often serves to adjoin two central areas of the home—the liv- ing room and kitchen, and as such it has become the known place for friends and family to gather and share in more than just food preparation. If you are considering a remodel or a new build this important space deserves con- siderable thought with regard to design and functionality as it will likely become the hub of your home. Keep the following in mind when working on the design of your island: Size matters! Additional workspace is a great benefi t of an island, and casual dining space is one of the most popular features also incorporated. In order to accommo- date both, you'll want a sizeable amount of square footage dedicated to this area. Consider countertop overhangs of at least 10-12" to give adequate chair and leg room for permanent seating.
