I DA U N I V E R S A L M a rc h -A p r i l 2 0 1 6 25 NUTS AND BOLTS NEWS Nuts & Bolts continued on page 27 JCB is adding to its range of midi-excavators with four new models in the 4.8 to 5.7 ton range, available in conventional, reduced and zero tailswing confi gura- tions. e new machines follow the introduction of next genera- tion 6, 8, 9 and 10 ton midi- excavators last year. UK-based JCB said that key features of the new models included 500-hour greasing intervals, improved cab instru- mentation, a 9 percent boost to bucket tearout, 5 percet additional dump height, and 2 percent more powerful bucket tearout force. It added that there was an 18 percent increase in 57C operator's cab capacity, and 11 percent improve- ment in visibility. e new 48Z-1 replaces the previous 8045Z/8050ZTS, while the 51R-1 – which JCB said would be particularly popular with rental customers – will replace the 8050ZTS/RTS. e 55Z-1 takes over from the 8055ZTS/RTS, but the 57C-1 is a completely new model. 'Attention to detail' Tim Burnhope, chief innova- tion and growth offi cer, said there had been "an incredible attention to detail" with input from customers and operators. He added that the new machines shared the same DNA as the new generation models already launched. He said all four new machines shared the durable design of the larger machines, with 100 percent steel bodywork and a sturdy four-plate dipper arm construction. e dig end is 100 percet bushed, which JCB said led to extending the greasing intervals to 500 hours. It has also revised the pin pick-up points to work with a number of competitive bucket brands, while optional hydraulic or manual quickh- itches can be specifi ed for faster attachment changeover. JCB has developed a new range of ECO buckets, with a redesigned profi le aimed at easier fi lling and improved material retention. e excavators feature a redesigned dig end, with a longer main boom and shorter dipper arm, which JCB said would provide up to 5 percent greater dump height for easier truck and site dumper loading. e upgraded hydraulic system also delivers up to 9 percent more bucket tearout force, it said, and 2 percent higher dipper arm tearout. Operator's cab e excavators feature an improved operator's cab, with the 57C-1 using the same structure as the larger 10 tonne machine. e cab is 18 percent more spacious and off ers up to 11 percent more visibility. JCB claimed that even in reduced and zero tailswing confi gurations, its midi-excava- tors delivered impressive levels of comfort for the driver, with reduced noise and vibration levels and easily-replaced fl at glazing throughout. It said the biggest development in the cab was the adoption of a new display screen and control system, with an automotive style rotary controller allowing easy access to systems and infor- mation. Another innova- tion is the inclusion of an optional Safe Li feature, complete with an integral Li Overload warning system. Claiming that it was an industry fi rst at this weight, Safe Li incorporates a green-amber-red graphic in the new monitor panel, with an audible warning that sounds if the machine approaches overload. e Safe Li feature is included as standard when hose burst check valves have been specifi ed. ere is also an electro- hydraulic dozer control lever, with up to three buttons in the head to control two-speed tracking, dozer fl oat and a four-way adjustable dozer blade where fi tted. ● www.khl.com 2/3/16 JCB Adds to Midi-excavator Range
