Editor's NOTE I was surprised when I received a phone call to help with a fundraiser for the local chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. They asked me to participate in their annual Lock-Up where I would "go to jail for a good cause" and solicit friends and family for donations to "bail me out." They explained the multi-week fundraiser would be capped with an event at a local restaurant featuring a mock jail where I would spend an hour "behind bars." Interesting, I thought. Certainly a good cause, but why me? I quickly realized why not me. After reaching out to people for my bail, stories came in. My brother told me of two coworkers who had family members lose their fight against muscular dystrophy in the last year. A coworker of mine mentioned her son's friend is battling the dis- ease. I was reminded of yet another coworker whose family is impacted. My mother told me of a cousin I have not seen in some time whose wife is stricken. It will most likely defeat her as it did her father and grandfather before her. See what I mean. The question all along was why not me? And why not you? What cause are you passionate about? When you know the answer, get involved. Make an impact. Every impact large or small makes a difference. I certainly wish I could have raised more money, but I was able to come up with a total that will fully fund three MDA support group sessions. That thrills me. Perhaps your cause is water. You're certainly in a position to be an authority in your area on the subject. Become the source people around you go to for informa- tion on this life-sustaining substance. Contractors throughout the country got involved in National Groundwater Awareness Week last month. During the week of March 6-12, thousands of profes- sionals talked to people about the importance of groundwater protection and good water well stewardship. They also published newspaper editorials and advertise- ments, recorded radio commercials, put up posters and fliers, and provided links on their company websites about the cause. It was an overwhelming success. But don't feel like you missed an opportunity if you didn't participate. Pledge to become a water champion right now and begin pro- moting the importance of conservation and annual water system checkups every day to those around you. Go a step further and become involved in causes helping bring water to those who lack this basic necessity. The National Ground Water Association's website at www.NGWA.org has a long list of groups doing such work both domestically and overseas. After all, why can't you make a difference?
