GEAR GUIDE April 2016 | Overdrive | 61 Volvo Trucks North America introduced its model-year 2017 Volvo engines, including enhance- ments to the D11 and D13 and the launch of the D13 with turbo compounding. The company says the new powerplants can deliver fuel economy benefits of between 2.2 and 6.5 percent compared to prior Volvo engines. Turbo compounding recovers wasted exhaust heat and converts it to useable mechanical energy in the form of 50 additional horsepower that is transferred back into the engine. The D13 with that technology was designed for customers in long- haul applications to provide up to a 6.5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared with previous engine models. Volvo's XE powertrain package with the D13 turbo-compounding engine is suited for customers want- ing to run in top gear in locations that have 55-mph speed limits. Through downspeeding, XE allows the engine to cruise at up to 300 rpm less than the average truck. Volvo also updated its 11-liter D11 and 13-liter D13 to include a common-rail fuel system designed to boost fuel economy and reduce engine and cab noise. An updated exhaust gas recirculation flow sen- sor helps reduce condensation and soot buildup in cold weather. The 2017 D11 and D13 also feature a new wave piston designed to increase the compression ratio from 16:1 to 17:1 to help maximize fuel efficiency. Improved flame propagation reduces soot while also increasing cylinder efficiency. No major updates are planned for Volvo's 16-liter D16 engine. Volvo also introduced a one-box exhaust aftertreatment system for D11- and D13 equipped power- trains that combines the diesel particulate filter with the selective catalytic reduction system and diesel exhaust fluid doser into a single unit. The system features a new copper-zeolite coating designed to improve low-temperature nitro- gen oxide conversion for improved emissions. The new design weighs 17 pounds less thn two-box unit, which remains on the D16. The company also debuted its I-Shift with Crawler Gears automated manual transmis- sion. Designed for crawler function- ality and startability, I-Shift with Crawler Gears is suited for appli- cations requiring a slow speed and maneuverability, such as concrete mixers with curb-pouring capabili- ty, asphalt paving, spreaders, dump trucks and heavy haulers. The Volvo I-See system, which works in tandem with the I-Shift transmission, also was launched in North America. The I-See feature memorizes a road's topography and stores it for use the next time the driver travels the same route. The system can store up to 4,500 different hills.
