www.cheersonline.com 41 June 2016 • ABV gives Unearthed a nice medium body and dry fi nish. 58 IBUs. (89) Penn Quarter Porter (DC Brau Brewing Co., Washington, DC). Pours medium brown with a thin head. Medium to light bodied with a smooth, light mouth feel. Light chocolate, almost sessionable at 5.5% ABV. (88) Bell's Java Stout (Bell's Brewery, Kalamazoo, MI). Aroma of fresh roasted black coffee and pronounced fl avors of bitter chocolate dominate the fi rst sip. Body is heavy and coats the palate from start to fi nish. The fi nish is rich and silky and leaves you wanting another taste! 7.5% ABV. (83) Excel Brewing Southside Stout (Excel Brewing Co., Breese, IL). Dark brown/black in color; light brown, ½-fi nger lacing. Roasted coffee/caramel aromas. Lighter than expected malt character; mild bitterness; fi nishes very dry. Medium car- bonation and quite lightweight on the palate for the style. Could almost be categorized as "beginner's stout," and would be a good introduction to the style. Not a stellar beer, but drinkable and decent price-to-value ratio. 6.5% ABV, 35 IBUs. (83) Breckenridge Vanilla Porter (Breckenridge Brewery, Littleton, CO). Breckenridge Vanilla is a great introduction to porter-style brews. Pour is copper/brown with a thin, off-white head. Flavors of roast- ed nuts and a soft touch of vanilla make this porter very approachable. 5.4% ABV. (83) Green Man Porter (Green Man Brewery, Asheville, NC). This porter pours dark creamy and the 40 IBUs put it right in my sweet spot. Just a little malty and chocolaty, with a little effervescence that goes away quickly enough to leave a pleasant fi nish. Brewed as a traditional 6% ABV British-style porter, you can drink more than one. (81) Two Roads Espressway Stout (Two Roads Brewing Co., Stratford, CT). From the second you pop the top you get hit with coffee. You can smell the espresso from three feet away. Espressway pours very dark, jet black, leaving a creamy fl uffy tan head. Very light body for an oatmeal stout, this beer defi nitely lacks the typical creamy mouth feel often associated with an oatmeal malt base. The palate does not follow the nose. Shockingly, the coffee is very subtle and I fi nd myself searching for that punch of espresso I smelled. The fi nish is short with the slightest of dark roasted malt and coffee bitterness. I hate to say it, but this beer goes down as a miss. 6.5% ABV.
