Water Well System Lifespan Focus of 2017 McEllhiney Lecture Defining the operational age of a well and redefining the life expectations of a new well are explored in two presentations to be offered during the 2017 William A. McEllhiney Distinguished Lecture Series in Water Well Technology. The 2017 McEllhiney Distinguished Lecturer Michael Schnieders, PG, PH-GW, will offer two lecture selections. "Defining the Operational Age of a Well: Predicting Maintenance Issues in Advance of Failure" examines how to better define a well's status in relation to its functional lifecycle. It also will look at how to identify when well rehabilita- tion needs to be done to ensure a long life and reduce operational costs. "Redefining Life Expectations of New Wells Through an Analysis of Past Failures" looks at how improved meth- ods of investigation, closer monitoring of energy costs, understanding corro- sion, and looking at the well as a system can better define all the inputs to allow for advancements in well design, con- struction, development, operation, and maintenance. Schnieders is the principal hydroge- ologist and president of Water Systems Engineering Inc. in Ottawa, Kansas. He is involved with well characterization, and consults on the operation and main- tenance of potable water systems. Named in honor of the founding president of the National Ground Water Association, the William A. McEllhiney Distinguished Lecture Series in Water Well Technology is made possible by a grant from Franklin Electric. New Magazine Launched by Irrigation Association The Irrigation Association is proud to announce that a new magazine, Irrigation Today, will launch in July. Irrigation Today is a printed, quar- terly publication with distribution to 10,000 IA member contractors, dealer/ distributors, consultants and manufac- turers, qualified nonmembers, and industry stakeholders. A corresponding online version will be developed with each issue with additional distribution including government agencies, irriga- tion districts, extension agents, growers and commercial end users, and IA's international stakeholders. To best serve the irrigation industry, the distribution of Irrigation Today will be equal among agriculture and land- scape professionals. Content included in the periodical will be equally balanced, focusing on topics such as sustaining water resources, smart technologies, drought, irrigation system maintenance and repair, and the state of the industry. Editorials will be written by industry leaders. Research on Effective Public Awareness to Be Presented by NGWA N GWA Director of General Public Outreach Cliff Treyens will present at conferences in June and July on re- search findings about effective public awareness. Treyens was selected for a poster presentation at the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists in Anchorage, Alaska on June 19-21. He also will present on the same subject at a water well symposium during the Soil and Water Conservation Society Conference in Louisville, Kentucky on July 24-27. NGWA conducted the research under an agreement with the Centers for Dis- ease Control and Prevention, which is paying the cost of presenting at the con- ferences. The research explored how private well owner outreach programs approach reaching, educating, and moti- vating private well owners to act to pro- tect their water quality. The research findings have been used to identify best practices of private well owner outreach programs to prompt mitigation of health risks in drinking water.
