Earlier in the month, a Florida jury unanimously sided with Arctic Cat, finding that the defendants willfully infringed all claims in question on two Arctic Cat patents. The case, filed in the U.S District Court for the Southern District of Florida, alleged that the makers of the Sea-Doo jet propulsion personal watercraft willfully infringed several Arctic Cat patents. SEE PAGE 14 BY LIZ KEENER MANAGING EDITOR Kawasaki's Mule 610 has for years been a staple for the brand, as more than 140,000 units have been produced. But for the 2017 model year, the Mule 610 has been replaced. Its successor is the new Mule SX, which Kawasaki officials believe will perform just as well as the 610. The Mule SX, introduced to media in early June at the Ancient Peaks Winery vine- yard in Santa Margarita, Calif., serves as a base-model Mule. The SX offers a compact utility side-by-side at a value price starting at $7,299 and topping out at $9,399 for the Mule SX 4X4 XC SE. The SX series offers three configura- tions each in the standard set, including the Mule SX, the Mule SX 4X4 and the Mule SX 4X4 SE, and in the XC version, includ- ing the Mule SX 4X4 XC, the Mule SX 4X4 XC Camo and the Mule SX 4X4 XC SE. The standard series is more utility focused, while the XC units have sportier features, such as 26-inch tires. "When we go to the XC, the focus for this model is to be a little bit more sporty and appeal more to the recreational user, so it's maybe a little less farmer and more of a chore unit, a transportation unit around a farm, when they just want that ability," explained Kevin Mann, 4-wheel and PWC product manager for Kawasaki Motors Corp. HERITAGE As Kawasaki Motors Corp. (KMC) celebrates its 50th anniversary in the U.S. and its 40th year of manufacturing in the states, the OEM is also marking its 28th year in the side-by- side market with the Mule brand. See Mule, Page 6 New version expected to grow sales volume BY DAVE McMAHON EDITOR IN CHIEF There's a sizable chunk of consumers who don't like the clutch-driven manual transmission on the Yamaha YXZ1000R. They aren't familiar with concept and don't have much interest in learn- ing. Alas, they couldn't be convinced to purchase the machine. It's with those potential customers in mind that Yamaha unveiled the 2017 YXZ1000R SS, the world's first pure sport side-by-side with pad- dle shifting. Enthusiast and trade media members were on hand in June for the reveal in Greenville, South Carolina, to see the drape pulled off the entire 2017 Yamaha side-by-side and ATV lineup. About two dozen dealers followed the media launch by taking the new units for a spin at the nearby Big Buck GNCC trail. "When we came out with the original manual transmission, we knew that was going to be more for the enthusiast," said Mike Martinez, Yamaha's PSB: FOCUS UTV—Sport SEE PAGE 22 Paddle-shifting part of YXZ1000R SS See Yamaha, Page 12 See Hot News, Page 3 July 11, 2016 • Volume 19, Number 10 • $3.99 Judge awards $46 million in Arctic Cat's lawsuit vs. BRP Mule SX offers blank canvas for customers 2017 SIDE-BY-SIDE MODEL MEDIA REVEALS PSB managing editor Liz Keener takes Kevin Allen, manager of pub- lic relations at Kawasaki Motors Corp., on a ride at the Ancient Peaks Winery vineyard in Santa Margarita, Calif.
