Castrol's radial polymer can withstand shearing forces in an engine. Even if several arms of the polymer break away, the molecular structure stays intact. This means that Hypuron 15W‑40 continues to protect the engine and maintains proper film strength to guard against wear. The industry standard for API CJ‑4 is 90 passes through the Kurt Orbahn Shear Stability Test. Castrol found that 150 passes better represents the shearing taking place in the field. The accompanying graph shows that Hypuron has less viscosity loss due to shearing than other API CJ‑4 products.
