Back Cover I recently saw a quotation in a newspaper asserting that the purpose of the university is to do research. I am paraphrasing because I don't know the context, and I don't want to embarrass anyone for what may have been an offhand comment in the heat of the moment. Research is one of the purposes of higher education. WAICU members are innovative and creative, doing cutting-edge research in multiple elds. These private, nonprot colleges and universities – including, not only faculty and graduate students, but also undergraduates – are leaders in academic research. Higher education, worthy of the name, also is called to serve the community. However, research and service are not the sole purposes of higher education. The primary purpose of higher education is . . . well . . . education. Research – the discovery of new knowledge and applications of new knowledge – is a foundation for high-quality teaching and learning. We live in the "Knowledge Economy." However, knowledge alone is not the be-all and end-all. It is what you do with knowledge – increase understanding, make moral and practical decisions, live civilly and thoughtfully with others, and discern meaning – that lies at the heart of quality higher education. I have heard people say, private, nonprot colleges and universities are just the same as the "publics." Well, yes, both sectors offer Chemistry, Computer Science, and Chinese. Both are affordable. The average net tuition - or out-of-pocket costs (list price minus student aid) - at WAICU member institutions is $5,384. Net tuition is below $5,500 for the eighth year in a row. More than 96 percent of our undergraduate students receive aid. Both sectors offer exible degrees. Both are open to students of every creed and color. Both welcome transfer students. But there are differences: the average class size at WAICU member colleges and universities is just 16 students. Students – including students of color – increase their chances of graduating in four years by 68 percent if they attend a private, nonprot college or university. Your research will also show that WAICU members are not a system; they are distinctive and distinctly different from one another. This matters to you because you can nd a college that is "just right" for you. Talk to your counselors and family; use this Guide and WisconsinsPrivateColleges.org and visit during Wisconsin Private College Week beginning July 10, 2017. Do your research for your college search.
