We understand that urine screens will be required whenever Rapid Eye Check reveals eye impair- ment, after serious injuries and after serious accidents. If a positive result is found, the laboratory will automatically confirm with a second test. 4. Anyone receiving a positive test result will not be permitted to return to work until management is con- vinced the problem is resolved and the employee is "fit" to return to work. 5. Anyone having a problem with drugs or alcohol who truly desires to rid themselves of the problem will be given as much assistance as possible to turn their life around. The company has access to coun- selors and educational facilities that have helped many. Those influenced by drugs or alcohol can overcome the problem when they want to. 6. We recognize that probably the most dangerous drug, which is perfectly legal for persons 21 or over, is alcohol. The use of alcohol "after hours" is one of choice. Although not recommended as the way to go, we do recognize that, tak- en in moderation and not closer than eight hours before reporting for work, most people will not be impaired for the next day's work. Alcohol mixed with drugs, will impair for up to three or more days. 7. The use of Rapid Eye Check by employees on their families or friends is encouraged, and a video on its use may be checked out upon request. The employees are required to sign a document indicating that they agree with the company's program and give their approval of its terms and conditions. A duplicate copy of this drug and alcohol policy is kept in the employ- ee's personnel file. A major wire service a few years ago released a dispatch detailing how backyard pools present a drowning hazard to pets and wildlife, as well as to toddlers. It is a message that bears repeat- ing, and also could serve as a selling point for pool fencing. Even though the focus remains on preventing childhood drowning, there is also the added benefit of keeping Fido safe. As the writer, Gina Spadafori, said in her story, the best way to keep pets safe around a backyard pool is to fence off the pool from the rest of the yard and never leave small animals unsupervised within the fenced pool area. Alarms that sound when a child or animal falls into the pool are also a worthwhile investment, she said. (As has been stated time and again in the pages of World Fence News, the most effective drowning prevention method is to have a proper isolation fence completely surrounding the pool, with self-closing and self-latch- ing gates in good operating order. One item to pay special attention to is that picket spacing which is sufficient to prevent a child from going through the fence won't stop many smaller dogs and wildlife. You may need to go to tighter picket spacing if you have a smaller breed of dog. Many manu- facturers produce fences with closely spaced pickets just for that purpose, or panels with closely spaced pickets that can be attached to the bottom of a regular fence.) According to the story, not all dogs can handle the water. Many bull- dog breeders and rescue groups will not place these dogs with families who have unfenced pools. The breed's front-heavy design makes swimming difficult, if not impossible, for these dogs (and simi- lar breeds) who tire quickly and can drown easily. Even dogs who love to swim can be at risk of drowning if left unsuper- vised, which is why it's a good idea to teach them how to find the pool steps just in case, the article noted. This can be done by having one person help the dog in the water while another stands on the steps encourag- ing the animal to find and use the exit. Not only children, but pets and wildlife also are potential swimming pool drowning victims Keep Up With The Misadventures Of Pete, Jake & Luckey The Fence Dog Each Month in World Fence News!
