The Ultimate One
Rider 's first issue, published in the summer of
1974, included a touring story written by founder
and publisher Denis Rouse called Highway One, You
Ultimate One, about California's iconic route that hugs
the Pacific Coast. With a view looking south at Highway
1 from a pullout up on Nacimiento-Fergusson Road,
this photo ran in Rider's 40th anniversary issue (May
2014), and it reprises a photo that graced the cover
of the July 1979 issue. With severe curves and cliffs,
jaw-dropping vistas and everything from summer fog
to towering redwoods and belching elephant seals,
Highway 1 is a truly epic ride.
