Stay Connected: Industry Associations and Dynamics Tuesday, December 6 9:15–10:15 a.m. Learn how to leverage the informa- tion and tools that organizations such as the National Ground Water Association, National Science Foundation, Safety Agencies, Hydraulic Institute, and Water Systems Council provide. From gaining knowledge through industry tips and tricks, to understanding standards and certifications, to leveraging your local lobbyist, and staying on top of regula- tory and legislative issues, a multitude of opportunities exist for you to enhance your business. Presenter: Diann Scott, Franklin Electric DACUM Codes: DOL5, DOL6, DOL7, DOL9 The Water Systems Cost Savings Act and Other Legal and Legislative Issues Facing Our Industry Tuesday, December 6 8–9 a.m. The Water Systems Cost Savings Act is legislation currently introduced in the U.S. Congress on behalf of the water well industry. It seeks to promote the consideration of household water wells as an alternative to long-pipe, central- ized distribution. Learn how you can help promote the passage of this legisla- tion intended to reduce the costs of providing water to Americans living in rural and isolated communities. Also re- ceive an update from Jesse Richardson, lead land use attorney at the Land Use and Sustainable Development Law Clinic and associate professor of law at West Virginia University College of Law, on legal and legislative challenges the water well industry is facing. Presenters: Margaret Martens, Water Systems Council, and Jesse J. Richardson, J.D., West Virginia University DACUM Codes: DOK8, DOL5, DOL6, PIG2 Drilling Operations and Well Construction Filtration Control in Drilling Fluids: What Is It and Why Should I Care? Tuesday, December 6 12:30–1:30 p.m. When we put a drilling fluid to work for us, it performs several functions, all helping us create and maintain our bore- hole. Borehole stabilization is one of the primary functions of the drilling fluid. This presentation explores how a most often overlooked fluid property, filtra- tion control, contributes to borehole sta- bilization and why it should matter to the drilling contractor. Ultimately the success or failure of the well, from drilling to production to financial viabil- ity, is affected by this one property. Presenter: Jeff Blinn, Halliburton DACUM Codes: DOB4, DOE2, DOE13, GOE2 EDUCATIONAL from page 29 Additional Educational Opportunities NGWA is hosting two short courses, one prior to the annual convention and one following the convention—giving you the opportunity to stretch out your learning. Note these offering have their own fees separate from the Groundwater Week registration and take place at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino, the Groundwater Week headquarters hotel. Groundwater/Surface Water Interactions: Tools and Technologies to Evaluate a Complex Environmental and Regulatory Setting December 5-6 Expand your knowledge regarding groundwater/surface water interactions during this workshop exploring the state-of-the art scientific understanding of these interactions, the environmental issues resulting from them, and the tools and techniques used to characterize them to evaluate the environmental risk these interactions pose at contaminated waterways. Direct Push Technology—Stronger than Ever . . . and Cost-Effective, Too December 9 Gain an overview of direct push technology (DPT), how it's used in investiga- tion and remediation applications, and the advantages of doing so. The relatively high costs of evaluating groundwater quality for site assessments create an increasing financial burden on prospective clients. However, DPT—including cone penetrometer testing, membrane interface probes, laser-induced fluores- cence, and in situ groundwater and soil samplers—provides efficient methods to investigate and remediate contaminated sites. Hydrogeochemical Processes Controlling Metals Remediation of Aquifer Systems December 9 Obtain a robust technical understanding of the remediation of metals in aquifer systems. Discussed will be the thermodynamic perspective and principal reac- tions—including acid-base, oxidation and reduction, precipitation and adsorp- tion—controlling remediation of metals and other inorganic chemicals found in aquifer systems. waterwelljournal.com Check Out Groundwater Week Website for Updates to Programs The National Ground Water Association has a website exclusively for information about the 2016 Groundwater Week.
